PROFILE


Since 2014, Cees van Dam is the Inaugural Amnesty International Professor of International Business and Human Rights at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University.

At King's College London he teaches Business and Human Rights in the Transnational Law LL.M, the only LL.M. programme of its kind to teach core legal courses from a distinctly transnational perspective.

2017

The elaborated version of Cees van Dam's inaugural lecture at the Rotterdam School of Management is published (March 2017).


2016

Cees van Dam en Heleen Tiemersma pleiten in het Nederlands Dagblad voor een wettelijke verplichting voor bedrijven om mensenrechten in hun productieketen te respecteren. De overheid zet in op vrijwilligheid maar dat werkt niet. Bovendien hebben bedrijven die mensenrechten willen respecteren belang bij een gelijk speelveld.

Cees van Dam writes a case note on the preliminary judgments of the Dutch Court of Appeal in The Hague in the Shell Nigeria case.



2015

In his Rotterdam inaugural lecture 'Enhancing Human Rights Protection: A Company Lawyer's Business', Cees van Dam presents his envisaged research into the role of the legal department with respect to the company's human rights policies and practices. Is Legal an obstacle or should it also be a driver for corporate human rights policies?

2014

In het Nederlands Dagblad van 11 januari 2014 verschijnt een opiniestuk van Cees van Dam over Nederlandse bedrijven die zich terugtrekken uit activiteiten op de Westelijke Jordaanoever: 'Bedrijven strijden tegen onrecht'.

Publicatie van Cees van Dam's bijdrage 'Het EVRM en de aansprakelijkheid van private partijen' in 62 Verkeersrecht 11 (2014), p. 410-417.

Cees van Dam's article on Tort Law and Human Rights (see under 2011) is published in Chinese in the Anglo-American Law Review Series.


2012

Together with four Dutch colleagues, Cees van Dam submits an Amicus Curiae Brief to the United States Supreme Court in support of the petitioners in the Kiobel v Shell case.



2011

Cees van Dam is the candidate of the
Dutch Government for membership of the United Nations Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises.

T
he Journal of European Tort Law publishes Cees van Dam’s article ‘Tort Law and Human Rights’. On the Role of Tort Law in the Area of Business and Human Rights.’ This article was based on the key note speech he gave at the 10th Annual Conference on European Tort Law in Vienna on 28 April 2011.


2010

Cees van Dam speaks at the Conference on Legal Remedies for Human Rights Abuse involving corporations. The conference was organised by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in Geneva, In 2008, he advised the ICJ's Expert Panel on its report Corporate Complicity in International Crimes.


Cees van Dam is keynote speaker at the TLP Conference 'Human Rights in the Corporate World in Utrecht.

2009

The Joint Committee on Human Rights of the House of Lords and the House of Commons publishes its report 'Any of our business and the UK private sector', referring, inter alia, to Cees van Dam's submission (see below).

Cees van Dam submits his evidence to the UK Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights regarding business and human rights (Call for evidence).

Op een bijeenkomst van het Nederlands Comite voor de Mensenrechen spreekt Cees van Dam over 'Civielrechtelijke aansprakelijkheid van bedrijven wegens schending van mensenrechten.

Een Nederlands bedrijf dat hoogwerkers verhuurt, is betrokken bij mensenrechtenschendingen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever. Een artikel van Simone Korkus in De Groene Amsterdammer met commentaar van Cees van Dam.
